WHAT A WEEK!

This spring break I decided I didn’t want a break, but rather a career boosting experience. A group of The UCONN Opportunity Fund Project students and I took a jump over to London. Once we got there we hit the ground running, visiting all of the tourist stops and afterwards taking the rest of the 5 days we had there to visit 18 financial firms, all from different asset classes and investment strategies. Some of the most notable ones being Morgan Stanley, Schroder, Quilter Cheviot, The Church of England, 3i, Troy and Brown Advisory, just to name a few.

As a Marketing major minoring in Financial Analysis, I joined the trip with the hopes of gaining a better understanding of where exactly it is that I fit in the industry. I got exactly that, seeing empowering women in successful senior positions doing what they love. I found my niche: the world of Investor Relations and Business Development in Finance. The thought of getting to implement my zest for marketing, data analytics and finance all in one is exactly where I see myself in the future.

If there is one thing this trip taught me, it is that nothing is for certain, as there are infinite paths to get to where you want to be in life. Nothing is carved out; you are the author of your own story and challenges will come, and knowing when to cut your losses is important. Knowing who you are is the first step to getting where you want to be.

The biggest thank you to my professor, mentor and motivator Steve Wilson for inviting me on this trip and believing in my capabilities and desire to challenge myself to further my knowledge of Financial Management. As well as our amazing trip companion Kathy Hendrickson for taking the time to make sure we made the most of these new connections made on the trip.

A big shoutout to the all the women from The UCONN Opportunity Fund Project and our travel companions from The University of British Columbia-Sauder Women in Finance Training program who made this experience so enjoyable. I not only left with indispensable knowledge about the industry, but with a great group of inspiring friends by my side. I wouldn’t trade this experience in for anything in the world, truly once in a lifetime.
